North Carolina has over 1,500 species of spiders. Most spiders produce venom, but their bites are not usually harmful to humans. However, the black widow and brown recluse are North Carolina's most dangerous spiders and can cause serious pain and injury.

To avoid spider bites:

• Wear gloves when working in the garden, garage, or other areas of your home that have been unattended for a while.

• Avoid walking barefoot through tall grass and weeds and in dark storage areas like sheds or garages.

• Shake clothes and shoes that have been sitting for a time and check for spiders before putting on shoes or clothes.

Remember any spider bite can cause pain, swelling and redness.

If you do get a bite:

• Wash the area with mild soap and water.

• Put a thin layer of antibiotic cream over the site.

• Keep the area clean and dry until healed.

• Make sure you have had a recent tetanus shot; call your doctor to ask if you are unsure.
