In addition to its rattle, the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, Crotalus adamanteus, is characterized by gray or yellowish skin and a dark diamond pattern that is outlined in black. This snake is located in the southeastern part of North Carolina.

Typical adult length: 4-5 feet

Habitat: sandy, coastal areas

Defenses used: camouflaging, fleeing, rattling its tail (sometimes)

Bite severity: Bites from rattlesnakes are usually more severe than copperheads and are a medical emergency.
